Carling's Creek

by Greg Thompson

Carling Creek Today

Did you know that Old East Village has a creek flowing through it from east to west, and that it still exists? Carling’s Creek begins in the ponds on the grounds of the London Psychiatric Hospital east of Highbury Avenue, enters large sewer pipes put in place to contain it during the early development of the neighbourhood, enters the neighbourhood at Queen’s Avenue and Quebec Street and exits just north of Princess Avenue at Adelaide. From there it flows to where it empties into the North Branch of the Thames River near Blackfriar’s Bridge.

Before it was confined underground, Carling’s Creek was well-known for its speckled trout and willows lining its banks.

Today, Carling’s Creek emerges in only one location – for a short half-block just east of Waterloo Street along the C.P.R. tracks before ducking back underground.
